Why app screenshots in ads aren't the most effective creative

You might think that users will want to see your app in action when looking at an ad.

But, that might not actually be true.

Do app screenshots hurt your ad performance?

Probably not. But, they rarely help.

Let me explain why.

The most important thing to have in your ad is a good visual headline.

That means it needs to be short, easy to read, and the main focus of the ad.

If you screenshot your app and include that, it won’t hurt.

However, if you’re adding in a good visual headline...

You shouldn’t have enough room to make the app screenshot big enough to read the small details in it.

It could just end up looking messy at best and confusing at worst.

Of all the ads I’ve seen…

I’ve never seen one with an app screenshot that made the ad better.

It’s nice to show what your app can do.

That’s an important part of selling.

But it’s not an important part of the ad.

At Right Percent, we always recommend getting rid of the app screenshots.

Instead, focus on the visual headline.
